Middle School Mentoring
Springfield's middle school mentoring program began in 2012. Hamlin joined Oregon's ASPIRE middle school network last year and now adds ASPIRE resources to those available for mentors.
Here's how it works:
ASPIRE is a program of OSAC (Oregon Student Access and Completion). ASPIRE is a mentoring program that matches trained and supportive adult volunteer mentors with middle and high school students to develop a plan to help them meet their education goals beyond high school. In addition to the data-driven approach taken through the Middle College program, ASPIRE offers an array of resources for mentors to use in working with students. Click here to view ASPIRE's Volunteer Toolkit for valuable tips about meeting with your students.
The opportunity to connect with a caring adult can make a big difference in a student's life. Mentors can also help guide students to think comprehensively about future plans and reinforce the idea that any student can pursue a post-secondary education.
All new mentors are required to attend one training session. Returning mentors are encouraged to attend to review materials.
