Frequently Asked Questions
We will continue to update this page as questions are received and addressed.
Q. Are the schools safe?
A. In 2006, the state of Oregon required all schools over a certain occupancy level to have a seismic needs assessment. In the state’s 2007 report for schools across the state, Walterville Elementary was the only school identified to be at “high risk” for collapse during an earthquake event. A seismic retrofit project was completed at Walterville in 2013 with a combination of grant and bond funds. All other schools assessed were deemed to be at “low risk.”
Our Facilities Advisory Committee will continue to monitor conditions at the schools. The committee will also be looking at possible uses for grant funds recently made available by the state legislature for seismic upgrades at schools.
